It was just three of us tonight as Brian was stuck on a ferry, helping install their new Wi-Fi System.

It had blown all afternoon in the mid-teens with gusts to twenty, leaving swells and a lumpy sea. Arriving to the starting area, I was still anticipating stronger breeze in spite of a 9 to 10 knot breeze and had Seth cinch the rig for 12 to 14, which never materialized.

With a 5 to 10 knot forecast the Race Committee optimistically set a course from Intrepid to Silver Eel and back.  Contrary to the rest of our class, I elected to start on port with the current for greater speed. We ducked Watercolors, cleared and tacked to windward of the fleet.  A minute or so later Sans Souci tacked to port and crossed behind to continue on port a good while prior to returning to starboard.

Except for a couple hours mid-day with glimpse of blue sky, it was cloudy all day with an East wind in the single digits during the morning, building into the low teens by mid-afternoon.

Approaching the starting area, I could discern with the binoculars,  posted on the committee boat, a two lapper to Intrepid; a pin end start became obvious. We had a good start in a 12 knot breeze at the pin with Cosmic behind us just to windward, and other than Breakin’ Wind, the rest of the class started down near the committee boat. Within a couple of minutes, the crew popped in the flattening reef which helped immensely in the 12 to 14 knot breeze. Cosmic eventually pulled away to windward. They were sailing very upright compared to us, which may have accounted for their better lift to windward, while we were often at twenty-degrees, occasionally more in the puffs. As Cosmic ahead tacked on the layline, we followed suit short of ninety-degrees, due to an expected overstand from current push. As Brian set the pole for the rounding, Seth & Bob were hiking hard in the 14 knot wind. We rounded with a good set to chase Cosmic down to the leeward mark. Watercolors rounded a good distance behind us with some difficulty in their set.

There were just three of us tonight as Seth & Megan are at the NJ Shore this week. We arrived at the starting area with plenty of time to access the situation and found starboard favored by about 20 degrees. Less than five minutes left to the gun, and Brian noticed the #2 batten had slipped out a few inches, which Bob & Brian quickly corrected; smooth job. The pin was a bit to windward, yet not nearly enough to account for the width of the line. So we chose the committee boat, clear to windward of Breaking Wind & crossed right on the gun, Cosmic down the line closer to the pin, with Sans Souci, then Watercolors trailing a good bit behind us. We were nearly five minutes into the race when Watercolors finally rolled us close to windward, and we short tacked across their stern.

Wednesday 07/29/09

Current: EBB - North Hill 1730

Two hours prior to race time Seth & I were questioning whether we’d have a race due to fog, yet 1700 came and passed with no broadcast of cancellation and the visibility appeared to increase.

Arriving late to the starting area, and following some difficulty removing the outboard, we had less than two minutes to the gun- little time to properly assess the situation other than check the course at the committee boat. Had I taken the time to ‘head-to-wind’, I would have discovered a heavily favored port end. We did get a good mid-line start on starboard well ahead of Breakin-Wind & Blissful. This was to no avail though, as both Cosmic and Sans Souci starting near the pin were off on port well ahead of us.
