Pine Island Race

Shennecossett Yacht Club ? Pine Island Race Sunday, June 26, 2005 Start Vixen Ledge, W/L Vixen to Dumping Ground & Return Dumping ground 3.1nm to the SW at 225 degrees Current: ebb 1458 North Hill; Wind SW 10 kts at the start Crew: Brian, Seth, George & RW There was a good turn out of Ensigns (10) & Non-spinnaker boats (8) for the first Fishers Island Sound weekend race of the season. The showing for the two PHRF spinnaker classes was disappointing with only three each. Many blamed it on Block Island Race Week wrapping up only a couple days previous.

Pitted against the two Pearson 30?s Euphoria & Salud in a 10 knot breeze, we soon found ourselves all alone on a pleasant starboard 1.4 nm beat. As Euphoria and Salud continued towards Silver Eel, we tacked back towards the center and shortly thereafter the wind appeared to die over the whole course. After numerous tacks in little to no wind, we eventually worked our way up and around the windward mark in thankfully very little current. 1.7 hr to the windward mark plus 1.5 hr to the finish gave us an elapsed time of 3:10:40.97.

What was originally planned as a two-lap race was shortened to one.

Interestingly, our elapsed time placed us second in the Ensign fleet.
