SeTherin Safety Policy

Every crewmember shall know the location of and be familiar with:

  • Lifejackets
  • Throw-able flotation devices
  • Bilge pump operation
  • Keel friction bolt operation
  • Outboard operation
  • The "boom" is dangerous!
  • Knife location
  • Flares & flare gun
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Your abilities and
  • the capability of your equipment

Sailing Policies

  1. Winds above 15 kts: Keel friction-bolt tightened
  2. Winds above 20 kts:
    • Lifejackets on, sooner in rough seas.
    • Companionway boards installed & secured.
    • Consider jacklines, especially if shorthanded.
  3. Foredeck crew carries a knife to cut halyards or sheets. Be careful; do not cut yourself!
  4. If we have a knock down, do not hold on to the shrouds, as this will hold the boat down and increase the turtle moment.
  5. MOB - Crew responsibilities
  6. Don't become complacent

MOB

Upwind Quick Stop

  1. The person who sees the victim go over the side yells "MAN OVERBOARD!" and then becomes the lookout. That person only looks and points at the victim with his or her arm extended.
  2. Throw a floatation device in the water for the victim.
  3. Have someone hit the MOB button on handheld GPS if in cockpit.
  4. The helmsman turns the helm hard over so that the boat rounds up into the wind. "Crash tack" All crewmembers should expect this maneuver and should be holding on from the moment "Man Overboard" is called.
  5. As the boat turns thru the wind, the genoa sheet is released, then the halyard and the genoa is gathered on the deck as the boat continues the 180 degree turn.
  6. Once the 180 degree turn is completed, we sail under main to recover the MOB.
  7. If necessary we will mount the outboard, check that all lines are on deck, start the engine and maneuver to the victim.

Downwind Quick Stop

  1. The person who sees the victim go over the side yells "MAN OVERBOARD!" and then becomes the lookout. That person only looks and points at the victim with his or her arm extended.
  2. Throw a floatation device in the water for the victim.
  3. Have someone hit the MOB button on the boat's GPS.
  4. The helmsman turns the helm hard over so that the boat rounds up into the wind. All crewmembers should expect this maneuver and should be holding on from the moment "Man Overboard" is called.
  5. As the boat turns into the wind, the spinnaker after guy needs to be eased until the pole gets to the headstay. Once the pole is at the headstay, the guy twing is cleated. Do not let the pole hit the headstay!
  6. With the spinnaker luffing over the boat, tighten the spinnaker sheet and drop the spinnaker onto the deck. "The trick is getting the spinnaker pole to the headstay and then cleating the guy before the halyard is released. This way the sail will fall on the boat. If the guy gets eased too far, the sail will fall behind the boat making a real mess."
  7. Once the 180 degree turn is completed, we determine whether to raise the jib or sail under main alone to recover the MOB.
  8. If necessary we will mount the outboard, check that all lines are on deck, start the engine and maneuver to the victim.
