The crew arrived late, and we found ourselves rushed in the pre-start prep. We had a decent start running down the line, with Cosmic safely to our lee.
Within a couple minutes, our good start with Cosmic a safe distance to lee fell apart as the the rig was still at 'base'.  Not being able to point with them, I tacked to port where we subsequently cinched the rig and followed Jolly Mon to the layline.

Following the start, Watercolors & Cosmic extended farther out on starboard & faired well.  We avoided that with the thought of stronger ebb offshore, though it appears they may have had a fresher breeze to compensate.
Watercolors was the first to tack followed by Cosmic.  We waited for Jolly Mon then tacked on her stern slightly to windward.

Arriving at the boat late morning, my work on the boat was not enthusiastic in the dreary overcast & mist, and became less so in the steady drizzle of the afternoon.   Yet around five the rain quit and our spirits rose as we shoved off the dock.

Our start was nearly opposite my OCS in last week’s abandoned race.  I started near the top of the line as planned though only after ducking Jolly Mon & Watercolors.  We hardened up on port while the rest of the class continued out on starboard towards Groton Long Point’s western shore.  Eventually, we tacked in to cross Sans Souci. That appears to have been a mistake, as we later felt there to be slightly more wind offshore, possibly enough to compensate for the dying flood.  On this assumption we continued off shore on the second beat, clear of GLP and gained nearly three minutes compared to the first upwind. Post race GPS chart show the forages offshore to have better speed.

the Donzo - 06/06/12

SeTherin was back in the water a bit before noon on Tuesday (6/05/12). I had the mast up by mid-afternoon; gin-pole worked fine.  Brian came by after work for a couple hours and we got a lot done prior to my Mudhead meeting at 1930.

Yesterday, I finished setup well enough to attempt our Wednesday night race.

Crew: Brian, Dan, Bob & I.  The thundershowers passed us by, yet we still got wet in the periphery, off and on.  After two delays, a race was started at 1830, only to be abandoned a few minutes later due to lack of wind.  Much rust to be worn off, and a long to do list.

Next week...
