Fishers Island - 09/05/09

Crew: Brian, Seth, Bob & RW
Winds: W-SW S-NE 3 to 6 kts
Current: ebb Race Point 1205
Start time: 1055
Start: West Harbor
Shrouds: at Base

Contrary to the forecast, a few minutes prior to the start, a local wind out of the southwest materialized, so we positioned for a start at the pin (south) end of the line, reasoning to tack and reach down the line, then harden up at the gun windward of the fleet clustered near the committee boat.  Jolly Mon must have had a similar plan as they sailed along our port side short of the gun, both of us flying our drifters.  Then the wind died to nothing.  Jolly Mon continued on starboard drifting towards the Eastern Pt of West Harbor, while we roll tacked, following our plan somewhat, though it was a mistake flying the drifter.  It long ago lost any windward ability and we could only reach parallel the line with it.  In the future we will use it only as sort of a ‘chicken-chute’!   Back under genoa (& sheeted to the outer track) near the north end of the line, we were able to slowly make headway towards North Hill.

Based on past experience we continued, westward beyond the North Hill Buoy a short distance. Still in the channel and witnessing the new ebb on our nose, we tacked to starboard till abeam the North Hill Pt, then tacked back to port for a good distance offshore with less current on the nose.  The wind continued backing to the south lifting us into the ebb towards Race Pt.   Following an exploratory tack on starboard, another port effort ensued prior to laying Race Point.

Seeing the vast majority of boats ahead flying spinnakers as we neared Race Point, caused us to be too eager.  We should have stuck with the genoa and close-reached past the R”2” buoy farther offshore prior setting the spinnaker.  A few boats succumbed to the eddy offshore between the buoy and Race Rock, though not as many as last week during the Ram race.

Past the airport we doused the spinnaker and worked offshore to escape the light air under Wilderness Point. Once clear, we bore off and again set the chute for the long reach down island. About a quarter of the way down, Jolly Mon finally caught up and passed.

Bill Mortenson (Wunderdog) told me at the party that Sparky (J24) had taken an inshore route down the backside of the island and arrived at the top of Lord’s, to have a private breeze westward to the finish.  I am certainly curious as to their course around the island (?).

Both the wind and the favorable current diminished as we neared the end of the island, and we hoped the Race Committee would have the wisdom to shorten the race at Lords.  It was not to be, as ahead we could see the whole ‘Pass’ as one big parking lot, with a few (very few) boats squeaking around the top and escaping.

We rounded the MOA in a close jibe to port and worked up inside towards Wicopesset Island, while listening to the occasional bumping of boats and yelling out in the channel.  We must have passed the better part of twenty boats going up the pass, rounded Can 7 real tight, hardened up still under spinnaker and made it half way to Can 9 before it all unraveled.  Matador (J80) rolled us to windward just as the wind died for both of us.  After working ourselves offshore clear of the rocks, and dilly-dallying around for a half-hour or more, we threw in the towel, dug out the iron-jibe and motored in for the party, picking up a Watch Hill 15 in-tow along the way.

Fishers Island - 08/30/08

Fishers Island "Around the Island Regatta"
Crew – Brian, Bob, Seth & RW
Winds: NE to SE at 3 to 6 kts
Current: ebb – North Hill 1049, Race Point 1104
Weather – low over cast, occasional light shower
Start time 1105 our class
Start: West Harbor, Finish: Lords MOA
Course: Fishers Island (ccw) – shortened at Lords Passage
Distance 9.85 nm
Shrouds: @ base

The ebb had just begun as our class (7th to start) beam-reached across the line in a whispering zephyr out of the northeast, all boats struggling to fly their spinnakers.  After experimenting with spinnaker & poling out the genoa wing&wing, we finally got the spinnaker working and reached up between Flat Hammock and South Dumpling, the only boat to take this route.  It worked out well for us, as we arrived at the North Hill bell at noon (wind 4 to 5 kts), on Brer Rabbit, Salud & Euphora’s heels, and ahead of Rusty Nail, Jolly Mon & Street Machine.

Fishers Island 'Round the Island Regatta'
Crew: Brian, Seth & RW
Course: 2, Around Fishers Island (cw)
Race length: 15.0 nm
Winds: N to NW, 8 kt avg Barometer: 30.15 Temperature: 72 F
Current: flooding (3.4 kts); ebb 14:18 Ram Island

With the wind out of the north and a significant flood, the RC chose a clockwise course for the 51st Annual Round Island Race, with 85 entrants. With only three of us aboard, I tightened up the rig, expecting winds in the mid to high teens per the NOAA forecast for Fishers. I should have given more credence to the SailFlow forecast, as our average for the day ended up around eight knots.

A comment about the Fishers Island Race on Sailing Anarchy's (ECSA) thread. I called in Friday evening and withdrew SeTherin from the race. -Rich

- Figment (Jolly Mon) Sunday, 09/03/06, 01:39 AM Post #60 By 11:00 or so winds were sustained 30-35, gusts in the 40s, so they didn't send us around. Bouy course mostly inside FI Sound. and by us, I mean the 14 boats that actually started. (80 registered when last I checked). Later in the afternoon (long after the finish) saw sustained 35-40, with a few gusts above 50. On the right boat, with the right sails up, it was a GREAT day sailing. And not a minute of it in rain!

Fishers Island 'Round Island Race'
Crew: BB, JL & RW
Current: ebb 1125 Race Point
Wind NW 5 to 8, gusts to 12 kts

In the last of the flood, our plan was to start near the committee boat on starboard (favored tack) for clean air, even if it meant a late crossing. Our strategy worked requiring only one short tack abeam Flat Hammock, necessary to clear the North Hill, while a number of boats had to tack twice. A smooth bearaway set at R2, and a starboard spinnaker reach took us down the two & quarter mile west side of the island to the point in thirty minutes.

After jibing around Race Point, we decided to stay out, as there appeared to be little wind near shore (the lee side of the island), and maybe more ebb offshore. This worked well to about two-thirds down the backside of the island when we sailed into a major lull. Ahead we could see many boats converging on South Beach, the narrowest and lowest portion of the island. We quickly doused the spinnaker and hoisted the genoa and slowly reached up towards the shore. After nearly thirty minutes, we reached the near shore breeze that carried us down to Lord?s Passage in another half hour, where a good portion of the fleet was mired in the light air and current.

Rounding hard around the MOA, we took a couple of tacks to the west to avoid the current up the passage. The final tack towards Wicopesset Island put us in good position for a tight rounding of C7 at the top of the pass. At C7, I noticed Salud and Jolly Mon northeast of us down current yet making headway (horsepower). Here things quickly unraveled.

Once clear north of the can, a short tack to starboard had us quickly drifting rearward in the two & a-half knot current, where we meandered for the next hour and a-half in alternating twelve knot teezers and four knots lulls, before throwing in the towel and radioing in a withdrawal. Thanks to Brian & Jeff for hanging in there in spite of it all! I know Jeff was looking forward to the party at Fishers.

Lessons: 1. On the back side of the island, with a north wind consider near shore at South Beach for more wind. 2. If the ebb is too strong at C7, continue toward the Connecticut shore prior to tacking to starboard. ** 3. If you have the horsepower to clear C7 on starboard and see wind along the north shore of Fishers, duck down out of the current between Cans 7, 9, 11, 15 & 17 as we saw ?Norwegian Wood - IOD? doing ahead of us. Horsepower helps! 4. Continuing west from the pass, it appeared most to the fleet ducked below East and Middle Clumps then reached up along the north side of West Clump prior to bearing off for the finish, most staying clear of Fishers north shore, except for Jolly Mon & Euphoria. They hugged the north shore of Fishers.
