Sunday - 07/25/10
Crew: Brian, Erin, Bob & RW
Winds: WSW, avg 8 kts, 3-12 kts, gusts 14, lulls 3
Weather: Clear, Temp 85 F
Current: ebb - North Hill 1100, earlier at Vixen
Start time: 1115
Start/Finish: just south of Vixen
Course: s/f–CR-SE-IR–BL R”2”-s/f; Distance: 12.0 nm
Shrouds: +1,+3,+2

The RC setup a great course: twelve nm - beginning with a 2.15 mile beat against the current to Cormorant Rock, followed by a 3.5 nm tight spinnaker reach with the current to Silver Eel, a broad reach up to North Hill (1.3 nm), a run to Intrepid (1.4 nm) with the current, another beat (2.8 nm) against the current to Black Ledge, finishing with a run (.85 nm) to the finish; with an elapsed time for SeTherin of 3 hours & 15 minutes.

I elected to start on port at the pin, so as to weather Black Ledge without tacking. Though, we had a small incident at the pin with Checkered Demon - as we were in a slight barging position.  It’s first time I ever experienced that on port. Our start was good, though the boat felt slow – whether it was current or setup/trim (?) we never determined. Usually, we catch up to some of the trailnig Ensigns (starting 5 minutes earlier) by the windward mark.  It took us nearly an hour to make the windward mark, where we were the last to round CR; our fate sealed.

We anticipated a tight reach, though set the AP regardless and found we should have set the reacher as briefly discussed.  Subsequently we successfully accomplished our first spinnaker peel, power reaching the remaining distance to Silver Eel.  Following the jibe round SE, on the broad reach to North Hill, we went for another peel back to the AP just in time for the run through the Dumplings to Intrepid.

The final beat followed a douse short of rounding Intrepid in a ripping current with nearly 3 miles to Black Ledge. Passing abeam GLP24, Brian cleared the rudder of a bird’s nest.  Wonder how long that had been there? On the hoist for the run to the finish, the spinnaker halyard got caught on the mainsail battens with a wrap about the headstay resulting; quickly shaken out.

SeTherin - First in Class

Crew: Brian, Seth, Bob & RW
Race 1
Winds: WSW (255), avg 9 kts, gusts 14, lulls 3
Weather: Hazy, Temp 85 F; Current: flood - North Hill 1015
Start/Finish: just West of Horseshoe
Course: s/f–WM–LM-s/f *2; Distance: 5.8 nm
Shrouds: +2,+3,+2

We motored out on the flood in little wind; already sweating, and lathered up with sun-block in hopes that the afternoon heat would produce a better breeze than forecast.

The RC positioned west of Horseshoe, as the non-spinnaker RC setup in the traditional Mudhead starting area east of the reef.  Following a slight delay re-positioning the line for the wind, the race got underway at 11:10.   I elected to start on port from the pin and duck boats as necessary to insure a clear lane when tacking back to starboard.

This worked well and we seemed hold our own all the way the windward mark, with our competition exiting as we approached on port.  The approach was mistakenly close, with too little time on the layline resulting in a late set after the rounding.

A jibe shortly after the set took us shoreward clear of the rhumbline parade and maybe into less adverse current once we jibed back to starboard.  We chose the left gate as it was the closest and there appeared to be more pressure on the upwind right side of the course than offshore to the left.  After a smooth douse & rounding, we made our second mistake by not recognizing a header as soon as we should have.  Our second rounding of the windward mark was tight again yet we were all prepared this time with a good set and subsequent jibe for shore.  Shortly after the jibe back to starboard the wind dropped from what had been a good ten knots down to 7 & 8 nearly the remainder of the run.

Race 2
Winds: WSW (255), avg 8 kts, 3-12 kts, gusts 14, lulls 3
Weather: Hazy, Temp 85 F;
Current: flood - North Hill 1015
Start/Finish: just West of Horseshoe
Course: s/f–WM–LM-s/f *2; Distance: 5.8 nm
Shrouds: +3,+4,+3

After a forty minute break for lunch, racing commenced again with a new breeze filling in from southwest.  Brian cinched up the shrouds as we thought it may build into the low to mid-teens. With no change in wind direction, we chose the same strategy as in the first race. (And in retrospect, would have faired better leaving the shrouds as they were.)

At the start, I approached again on port against the starboard fleet. As the wind went light short of the pin, and with the current pushing,  we kissed it.  A not so pretty 360 in the lee of the fleet got us going again. Finally settling down on port in clear air we found ourselves in better position than expected.

The starboard tacks offshore were rougher requiring a bit looser trim and more cunny on the genoa and car back; than the ports paralleling the shore.  Our first round was again tight, though the chute was up without delay, and we again jibed for shore.

It became obvious the fickle wind had returned and we extended shoreward to near Vixen on both downwinds.  I carried her higher than target in the chop and higher yet in the many (inconsiderate) powerboat wakes, in the occasional smooth spots dropping down to target (averaging 166 TWA).  The last run was the worst; as the wind fluctuated between four to eight knots.

I felt we did better in the first race than the second, when actually we corrected to 2nd in first & to 1st place in the last races for a first overall.

Crew: Brian, Seth, Bob & RW
Winds: WSW, avg 8 kts, 3-12 kts, gusts 14, lulls 3
Weather: Clear, Temp 71 F; Baro 29.94
Current: ebb - North Hill 1315, flood to begin at 2000
Start time: 1810, 05:00 into ebb
Start/Finish: just East of Seaflower
Course: s/f–I–s/f *2; Distance: 4.5 nm
Shrouds: +2,+3,+2, could have slacked off to near base on second beat

We motored out in a light rain. Bob & Brian put their weather jackets on momentarily, but the storms stayed harmlessly ashore all evening.

There was slight delay of the start for the laying of a wreath with a moment of silence in memory of Spence Leech, a perennial Mudhead & Race Committee member.  After a course adjustment due a wind shift the program commenced with the first warning shot at 1805.

Port was obviously favored, so we approached from the pin side ducked a few sterns and hardened up crossing on the line at the gun with speed, for very good start, pin side of mid-line. Wunderdog (J24) eventually rolled us to windward about half way down the course.  Rather than tack, we freed up and continued to the layline.  Tacking would have led us into more traffic, while continuing increased the likelihood of overstanding.  We rounded on Salud’s stern, slightly ahead of Plain Vanilla (J22) with a good set, initially sailing a bit high off of the J22's lee quarter, then bore off for a 155 TWA average to the leeward mark.  With occasional winds into the low teens, we made our rating on this leg.

The leeward mark was a bit crowded (four boats), though we faired well as the last boat. We had an inside overlap on Brer Rabbit as Looney Tunes was finishing a 360 abeam off us & the mark. Rabbit exited with Tunes on her tail, while I squeezed between them and the mark and quickly bailed out to starboard.

We tacked out on starboard one more time (with no traffic issues) to insure a short layline and a minimal overstand. The rounding and set went smooth, but the wind was dying, making for a slow last leg against the current.

In the progressively dying wind, the leg times were:
1st Beat: 13 minutes
1st Run:  17 minutes; against a 1 kt avg current
2nd Beat:16.6 minutes
2nd Run: 22.5 minutes; against .7 kt avg current

No wind & no race WN the 7th, though that did not dampen the Mid-Season Party at Noank Village Boatyard, quite successful I believe.  Seth, Megan, Bob & Brian made the trek out to the starting area hoping to race, while I was on the hard getting the grill going, etc.  Big excitement of the evening was the Schooner Alabama running aground at the Rock-pile in the entrance to the Mystic River.  Seth & Megan went out on a motorboat to watch the unsuccessful attempts to pull her off.
