The Niantic event is the farthest west we care to venture for a same day event, and this year the current was on our nose both going and returning, two hours each way. Leaving Spicer’s at 8am, the motor over was in smooth water, under clear skies, with little to no wind. The forecast was a bit ominous wind wise so we donned PFD’s, cinched keel down & the shrouds to their tightest, & prepared for a stiff wind.

Crew: Brian, Seth, Bob & RW Winds: SE to E avg 8.5, gust 12 Temp: 63 F, Baro: 29.82; 60 & 29.83 at race end Weather: high thin ovc; fog developing east end of FI Sound Current: ebb - North Hill 1522 Start time: 1800, 02:38 into ebb Start/Finish: just between Horseshoe & GLP Course: s/f –W-s/f; 177 @ 2.1 nm Distance: 4.2 nm Shrouds: +2,+0,+1
A minute before the gun Sans Souci crept windward of us, effectively pinning us below the line in the light air. We slowly luffed the sails and pulled above his stern just as the gun went off; 20 seconds short of the line. At the line crossing, we tacked to port with Sans Souci following suit ahead and to windward, as Dragon Z Balls blew past on port between us and the committee boat. We eased off the genoa slightly and got some breathing room in Sans Souci’s lee, slowly passed them and pulled ahead. Would it have been better to have tacked twice for a clear lane? Maybe if she did not follow suit with a cover. Brian mentioned the fog developing at the far end of the sound, concernd with the affect on the wind.

Crew: Brian, Seth, Bob & RW Winds: NNW 4 to 8, gust 12 Temp: 65 F, Baro: 29.67; 63 & 29.65 at race end Weather: clear w/ possible overland TRW Current: flood - North Hill 1642 Start time: 1800, 01:15 into flood Start/Finish: just between Horseshoe & GLP Course: s/f –D/M-s/f; 251 @ 1.5 nm Distance: 6.0 nm Shrouds: +2,+3,+2
Brian cinched up the shrouds on the motor out in anticipation of a good breeze, and we got the motor off in time for a good line assessment, and thru in the flattening prior to raising the genoa. We discussed changing to the older genoa due to the stiff winds; which would have been a good idea had we considered it sooner. Also, we probably would have benefited from another turn on the shrouds.

Crew: Brian, Seth, Bob & RW Winds: NNW 4 to 8, gust 12 Temp: 52 F, Baro: 29.80 Weather: overcast with occasional light drizzle Current: ebb - North Hill 1542 Start time: 1800, 02:15 into ebb Start/Finish: just North of N. Dumpling Course: s/f –D/M-s/f *2; 018 @ .75 nm; Distance: 3.0 nm Shrouds: at base
We’ve had a big shake-up in classes this year, due largely to lesser numbers. Past years’ Classes 1 & 2 have been combined. So we’re racing against the J22/J24 group, Prophet (Evelyn 25), and Salud, a Pearson 30 from the previous Class 3. There is little resemblance to last year’s scratch sheet, only 5 classes compared to 6 & 7 of the past with eleven boats in our Class 1.Motoring out, we spotted the RC off shore of North Dumpling with a line setup for what appeared to be a downwind start. Arriving at the committee boat and noting the posted course, we realized the line was setup unconventionally with the pin to starboard.
