Watch Hill YC: Horton Race
Course: Reaching 4 mile legs (4 laps)
Kim, Seth and I left Spicers about 0830 with the ebb for the haul down east past Napatree and out the Watch Hill Passage. The starting area was off Misquamicut Beach. The committee set the course for a SE windward/leeward course, with four-mile legs for a total of 16 miles. By race time, the wind had veered the SW, and the R/C kept the course. The race ended up as four reaches, somewhere between near and beam on the outbound legs and beam reach on the returns, right in SeTherin's sweet spot.

We arrived at the island about 0935 in plenty time to get a sense of the wind and forthcoming conditions. The first gun went off on schedule at our class third to start at 1025.
We were set up for a great start at the committee boat, to windward of the fleet of 15 or so boats. At the crossing moment I gave in to a barger on our starboard beam, David Kelly (Mast Transit – J27). I should have closed the door on him. As a result, he rolled us significantly slowing our acceleration out the gate. Not quite making North Hill on the beat we threw in two tacks a couple minutes short of the mark to clear. In retrospect we should have tacked up for clear air right after the start similar to Cygnus.
Rounding North Hill, we had a broad reach down the west shore in 12 to 22 knot winds. As the wind reached 20 we put on our PFD’s. Not lasting long, it was soon back to less than 15. In less than five minutes we were abeam North Hill, and twenty minutes later jibed around Race Point.
The sail Race Point to Lord's Passage starting broad went to a beam reach for the most part with Bobby constantly playing the genoa luff similar to a spinnaker. About half way down the island Kim took the lazy port halyard forward to bow, then Bobby cinched it as the backstay was eased in an effort to reduce the weather helm. Nearing Lord's Passage now on a nearly a beat, Kim brought the lazy halyard back to the mast and we prepared to harden up around the MOA(L) at 1213 an average of 5.7 for the 6.65 nm along the south side of the island; essentially an hour-ten minutes: Race Point to Lords. Prior to rounding, Bobby put in the flattening reef, then the first reef in preparation for the beat up Lords Passage. Shortly after the MOA we tacked. Though not familiar with the hazards, I tacked back too soon. A study of the chart, shows you can gain by favoring an inside course between the MOA & C7in an ebb.
At the top of the pass, we were in relatively good shape, some of our completion in sight. Over the next 1 7/8 miles, five marks port need be honored to port. The wind now in the high teens accompanied by waves and traffic hindered our ability to readily tack and thwarted my strategy of ducking in and out between the marks in the max ebb. It still took us four tacks to clear the first mark C7 at the top of Lord's. Not able to see marks C9, C15 due to the traffic, and in an effort to clear, we mistakenly sailed too high, following the majority of the fleet out into the current, passing C13 also to port, an unnecessarily longer course exposed to greater current.
Clearing C13, influenced by Ed (Just Friends) ahead of us, we continued on a reach in clear air choosing the rhumbline course to Clay Point contrary to my original strategy -bearing off for the longer near shore route in less current (though where the wind may have been less). Had we stayed down along C9, C 15 and C 17 as originally planned, the shore route may have been the better choice. Somewhere near C 1: we shook out the first reef, then eased the flattening reef about five minutes later. The wind blew well into the high teens for most of the 3.3 nm reach to Clay Point; both Kim and Bobby hiking to the max along cabin rail. Upon rounding Clay Point and bearing off onto a broad reach to the finish, many of the nearby boats set their spinnakers. We crossed the line at 1336 for a 191 minute elapsed time, in plenty of time for the party. Rafting up next to Cygnus, we relaxed and debriefed for an hour or so prior to taking the launch for the part at FIYC.
Following the party we had a relaxing motor to Noank just in time for the last run of the day of Spicer’s launch.
It is curious that our fastest Fishers Island Race ever garnered us only 10th place.

Sunday Kim Wishart, Bobby Fagan & I did the Annual RIYC race. The day started off foggy, visibility less than a tenth mile as Kim steered us out around Groton Long Point We then anchored for a while on the west side of Groton Long Point while the fog cleared. Again I was surprised that the race was not delayed longer than it was. The Race Committee was determined to start around the island. We set up using the light spinnaker sheets for the genoa on the outside tracks, and did not stow the motor until nearly a half hour following the start.
After an approximate twenty-five minute delay to the first gun, our start followed the Ensigns, and the “B” spinnaker class, in a drifter across the line. Starting on port near the left end we crossed the line directly behind Cygnus. The wind could not have been more than three knots at the time, and the visibility less than a quarter mile. Cygnus, Celebration and Tenacity stretching out ahead took high courses east of North Dumpling a bit out of way by my reasoning. Remaining low, nearly a beam reach, we bore southwest. Nearing North Dumpling the visibility picked up to nearly a mile.
Continuing to work the boat in the light air along the Dumplings alternating from wing & wing and port beam reach we found ourselves even with Cygnus as we drew abeam South Dumpling. The speed appeared slightly greater with Bob and Kim sitting forward of the mast. Now on starboard we decided to stay clear of the shore as there appeared to be slightly more wind offshore. George cut the corner at North Hill to hug Fishers Island, a move that really paid off a third of the way to Race Point, with better current and beyond Silver Eel increasing wind with a shift to the southeast. At 1150 our wind fell to nothing and over the next half hour boats along the shore took leads those of us offshore would never recover. Slowly the southeast wind drifted towards us; back on port we finally began moving, arriving at Race Point 15 minutes behind Cygnus we figured.
Hardening upon port at Race Point in an effort to work offshore for more ebb we found ourselves in a lot of chop and our speed down to nearly nothing even though the wind was 6 knots, so took a short tack along side the airport on starboard for smoother water prior to tacking back offshore for more ebb and a little wind (possibly a mirage). We then hung on starboard short Wilderness Point and diminishing wind, then tacked out for a final five mile hitch on starboard for the finish. The south shore seemed to favor the offshore route with slightly more current and wind.
Shortly after our final tack to starboard, we began to hear finish guns (greatly relieved) in the distance signaling that the RC had shortened the course, placing the finish alongside MOA L, the entrance to Lord’s Passage. A good decision on the RC’s part as few if any boats would have been able to negotiate the ebb with so little wind. As the finish line began to take shape in the haze, behold there was Cygnus crossing about five minutes ahead. Some how we cut 2/3’s off their Race Point lead.

I have not received the times in the mail yet, yet we corrected to second overall and probably beat half or more of our class boat for boat. Thanks to Kim and Bobby for an enjoyable day..

44th Fishers Island Yacht Club “Around Fishers Island Race”

Wind – SW 8 kts at the start.
We arrived at the island about 9am after an uneventful motor over in the fog. With the fog clearing a few minutes before, the first gun went off on schedule at 10am, and at 10:30, we were the third class to start. Less that five minutes before the start we were nearly rammed in our port quarter by Starchaser, a Hunter 34. Bob very aptly pushed, shoved off their bow pulpit at the last second.
We got a great start at the committee boat, to windward of the fleet of 22 boats and held our own out to North Hill. With many tacks down the west shore of Fishers Island near the shore to avoid the current, we were pleased with our position approaching Race Point about noon when the wind nearly died and the fleet caught us. The whole fleet struggled around Race Point with little to no wind against the nearly max flood.
Rounding Race Point around noon, it took us three and a half hours with little wind, sometimes wind & wing and some starboard broad reaching against the current to make Lord’s Passage at the east of the island. With George Carlson (Cygnus) rounding a bit in front of us; we watched him run up the passage and get swept down at the top when he took his whisker pole down and jibed the genoa. We likewise ran up the channel wing & wing to C”7” then hung there as if we had lasso around the can. Finally, after nearly a half-hour we put our outboard on as Cygnus dropped their genoa and started their motor also.
Along the north side of the island in the rain we were surprised to find numerous boats anchors and many others motoring as ourselves. As we came into West Harbor and rafted up alongside Cygnus & Blind Date we found that out of 97 boats in the fleet, only three finished. We went to the party just the same; most of the food was gone, though we were still able to find plenty of drink.
A day on the water is always better than a day at the office.

Up all night flying, no sleep at all.
Good start but screwed the pooch by tacking back towards Fishers’ north shore too soon (the second tack in for the better part of a 5 minute loss). We should have stayed out a bit longer for the last of the ebb, but instead suffered from the new flood along the shore sooner that we would have. The wind went light and we would have eventually had to take a few tacks to gain C7, just did it too soon. By the time we rounded C7 we were trailing badly.
Two and a half hours later with the wind dying, we had a difficult time rounding the bell at North Hill against the current and got swept toward North Dumpling.

Following the start we sailed west of NH on port a good 1/2 mile for more current (ebb) to Race Point and to avoid the ebb along NH’s west shore. Fought a full ebb on the north shore return to West Harbor.

Drifter to North Hill and a slow beat to Race Point. The drifter continued on the backside then morphed into a slow spinnaker reach. At Lords the wind picked up for nice sail to the finish.

Flooding at the start, wind northeast, eight kts. Forty seconds late for the start. Port favored , hugged the north shore to Lords. Wind dropped to six knots, and changed to the drifter at the MOA. After about 30 minutes, a southeast breeze filled in for a strong port beam reach down the backside of the island. We then had a starboard beam reach up the west shore and switched to the genoa short of North Hill for the beat to the finish.
3rd out of eleven boats. Elapsed Time: 270 minutes
