In the pre-start looking upwind to the left was an area of calm east of West Clump, while there appeared to be more breeze on the right. So with the anticipated current lift we chose the right.

We ended up down the line at the start just windward of Liquid Foundation, tacked to port and ducked a few transoms.  Nearly the whole class followed suit shortly thereafter, except maybe Merganser.
The wind was fairly light, and we were the only one to continue short of the layline. The rest of the class tacked over towards North Dumpling with a number of tacks up to North Hill. Merganser made out big favoring the east side of the course and was second to round behind Zallee.

After the round we took a jibe to port in an effort to stay up current of the rhumbline.  On the way downwind, there appeared to be more wind to the east so we chose the starboard gate. On this second upwind our TWS average was 8.5 versus 6 on the first to the west.  We also chose to go east & south of the Hammock for current relief & possibly more wind, even though it meant overstanding North Hill.

So the big question is: was there more wind all along on the eastside of the Dumplings?

Art Shaw, (Redline) went east of the Dumplings on both upwind legs which paid off big time with a ninth in fleet and the class win.  I have a suspicion the fleet top 10 took the left upwind also.
After the initial dying sea breeze on the first leg, the gradient filled in from the south and held, making for a pleasant second lap of the course.

We had gone down stream taking the motor off & stowing it below, so it took a while to get back to start line.  The RC had set a an unusually long line, and we found ourselves down by the pin with less than a minute to go when I would rather have been near the committee boat as it appeared closer to the windward mark.  I figured on the chart later the windward mark was about 5 boatlengths close at the starboard end of the line.  We got a good start though in clear air all by ourselves. 

About five minutes into the run, I took a short port jibe to work up current prior to reaching the deeper channel. In retrospect, it would have paid to have done it directly after the round while in less current. 
We rounded North Hill on the heels of Thunder Chicken, with Swiss Cheese between us and the mark.

Swiss Cheese bore off for the west of North Dumpling while Thunder Chicken took the shallows along the south shore, as did we eventually.   For a while it looked like the Swiss Cheese route may have been better, yet I think Thunder Chicken beat them to Intrepid.

From Intrepid many boats continued on port towards the Groton Long Point.  We tacked to starboard for a good while to ride the current of the deeper channel.

Rounding the windward mark in diminishing winds (5 & 6 knots) made for a slow port spinnaker run to the finish.  We split the difference between the rhumbline (Merganser) and the longer shore route & jibe (Cosmic).

The class turnout was small, due to the all-day rain storm I assume.  It began to clear some near 4 o’clock though too late for many I assume.

The start area was in the vicinity of the old Mudhead’s “X”, tucked between Horseshoe & Groton Long Point.  We decided to favor the left as there appeared to be more wind to the east of the rhumbline. We had a good start on the line and to windward of Cosmic, Zallee & Jolly Mon, with Merganser & Zara trailing.  Zallee was the first to tack to port. We followed Jolly Mon, with Cosmic farther out nearly on the layline, if not overstood.  Cosmic was first to round the mark, followed by Zallee then Jolly Mon. 

After a short starboard jibe following the set, we jibed for a long port to the leeward, for a timely douse.  We decided on the right for the next upwind, due to the threat of increasing current.  The result was an average COG of 35 degrees off the rhumb versus the 45 to 50 to the left on the first upwind, and was certainly faster by 2 plus minutes.  Average tws on first upwind was 11 kts versus 10 on the second. Should we have gone right from the start? 
The downwind to the finish was nearly identical to the first.
